When scheduling a patient for an abdominal ultrasound, what should you instruct the patient?

Your doctor has requested that an ultrasound exam be performed on your abdomen and pelvis. Please follow these simple instructions so that we may better serve you.

An ultrasound machine produces a picture of your body using sound waves. A blunt device called a probe is placed on your skin.

  1. Please do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the exam. You may take your medications with a sip of water.
  2. 2 hours before your scheduled exam time, you should drink 1 quart of water only. This water should be finished 1 hour before your exam. Do not void once you start drinking.
  3. Report to Radiology approximately 20 minutes before your scheduled time if you have not been contacted by the Admitting Office.
  4. Once the pelvic ultrasound is completed, you will be allowed to empty your bladder.
  5. These two exams will take approximately 1 hour total time.

What is the patient preparation for an abdominal ultrasound?

You usually need to avoid food and drinks for 8 to 12 hours before an abdominal ultrasound. This is called fasting. Fasting helps prevent gas buildup in the belly area, which could affect the results. Ask your provider if it's OK to drink water before the test.

What are instructions before ultrasound?

Preparing for an Ultrasound.
Eat a low fat dinner on the evening before the examination- (no fried, fatty or greasy foods and no dairy products).
Nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours prior to your appointment..
If there are medications that you must take, only drink a small amount of water when taking the medications..

Can you drink water before an abdominal ultrasound?

If you eat anything within 6 hours of your exam, your gallbladder may not look normal in the ultrasound images. During your fast, you may drink clear liquids such as black coffee, tea, and water. Do not drink anything that contains fat or sugar.

What is the appropriate position of the patient for whole abdomen ultrasound?

Remember to get your patient in a good position (supine, left lateral, right lateral) with one of your hands on the patient and the other one on the ultrasound machine. For the sonography of the vessels within the abdomen, e.g. IVC or the aorta, the usage of various Doppler studies is indicated.
