What were the major protests of the American Indian Movement?
Key events for the American Indian movement include the group's formation in Minnesota in 1968, as well as the initial occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969. The movement also organized the “Trail of Broken Treaties” March, where protesters marched on Washington, D.C.
What issues did Native Americans in the 1970's seek to address?
In the mid-1970s AIM's efforts were centred on the prevention of resource exploitation of Indian lands by the federal government. With many of its leaders in prison, and torn by internal dissension, the national leadership disbanded in 1978, although local groups continued to function.
What happened to Native Americans in 1970s?
In 1970, the Indian unemployment rate was 10 times the national average, and 40 percent of the Native American population lived below the poverty line. In that year, Native American life expectancy was just 44 years, a third less than that of the average American.
What was one major success of AIM American Indian Movement in the 1970's?
