An alert roster must be maintained to list all the individuals that need to be notified in the event of an incident. It is important that this list only contain the names of the individuals needed to respond to the incident. There are two types of alert rosters an organization can choose to use, a hierarchical roster or a sequential roster. A hierarchical roster is best thought of as a hierarchy chart where one person calls several people and each of those people call several other people and so on until everyone on the list has been called. The hierarchical roster is quicker than the sequential roster since multiple people are calling multiple other people in a parallel fashion. The disadvantage is that the more people involved in disseminating the message, the greater the chances the message loses accuracy. The sequential roster has one main contact calling everyone else on the list. This method maintains the accuracy of the message but has the disadvantage of being much slower. The alert message is a short and concise description of the incident. The challenge is ensuring that the message is informative and that it adequately describes the incident response plan that must be implemented. It should also be short enough so that it does not delay the notification process. The alert roster and message are a vital part of the incident response process.
